Girls and Guns

The first two images remind me of the full color plates I used to marvel over in Osprey’s Men-at-Arms and Elite books when I was younger. The second image also made me think about Sora no Woto for the first time in years. What a mediocre, weird, contradiction-packed show that was. It follows soldiers, but there’s almost no action, since it’s a slice-of-life anime. It ostensibly features women in combat roles, but a shot at the tail end of the season shows exclusively male armies. An apocalypse is supposed to have cast the world back to an age in which the telephone and electric lights are not universal, but the giant mech tanks remain. Almost all of the characters have Japanese names, even though they’re in faux-Switzerland. The Germans are inexplicably swarthier than the Helvetians. And to top it all off, there was that one episode that must have been written by a piss fetishist, because I can think of no other reason why one would dedicate around three and a half minutes of a 24 minute episode to showing how desperately a girl needs to pee.
